Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

14 Nov - 15 Nov

When disaster strikes – confidently support staff after overwhelming events

This two day workshop offers you the opportunity to learn and develop simple, practical and effective strategies for supporting colleagues, team members and volunteers in the aftermath of overwhelming events.

Integrating both theory and hands-on practice, this workshop is based on the latest research into risk and resilience. It also draws on our extensive clinical experience of working with traumatic stress, together with our long-standing knowledge of the relief, development, missions and expeditions sectors.

What will the course cover?

Day One will provide you with an accessible and engaging introduction to acute stress, including the latest research on the neuroscience of trauma and on the impact of trauma on both individuals and groups. We will also be exploring in-depth the phases of responding in a crisis and providing an overview of the core actions of Psychological First Aid.

On Day Two we build on your theoretical awareness with a series of practical skills exercises designed to boost your capacity and confidence to deliver Psychological First Aid following traumatic events.

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Define the basic objectives of Psychological First Aid and identify its limitations
  • Describe the impact of traumatic stress on both the body and mind
  • Identify the broad range of normal early reactions that people can experience in the immediate aftermath of a crisis
  • Deliver basic briefings on stress and trauma to colleagues and team members following critical incidents
  • Explore personal responses to distress and understand the role that awareness and active self-care play in your teams’ capacity to help others
  • Effectively use active listening skills to contain and stabilise a team member or colleague following a critical incident
  • Gain practical and emotional assistance that complements and bolsters the coping skills of colleagues or team members
  • Conduct a basic risk assessment using major risk factors for psychological distress
  • Recognise when  to refer team members for further support
  • Help team members and colleagues devise a robust, culturally relevant post-incident action plan
  • Explore organisational protocols which may be required in order to promote Psychological First Aid.

Who is it for?

This workshop is designed to meet the needs of people responding to a crisis for a robust, evidence-informed support protocol for those affected. While anyone who is interested is welcome to attend, we focus particularly on country directors, line managers, supervisors and team leaders and expedition leaders who oversee people in challenging environments, including conflict zones and humanitarian emergencies.
